Hello Families!
My name is Lauren Vogt and it is my pleasure to welcome you and your child to Kindergarten. I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Miami University of Ohio. This will be my seventh year teaching Kindergarten and my second year at Disney! I taught at another Chicago school for four years prior to this and I could not have been more excited to make the move to such a wonderful school! I am very excited to be your child’s teacher and I look forward to partnering with you to help your child reach their full potential and have a wonderful time throughout their Kindergarten year! This letter, along with my weekly newsletter and website, will answer many of the questions you may have and provide insight as to how our classroom will operate.
Homework Folders (Green)
Your child will have a homework folder that will be used for homework, notes, and work being brought home after being graded. The left side of their folder will be for work to “Leave at Home” and the right side of their folder will be for work and documents to “Back to School”. I will provide these labels once the folders are in. It is imperative that your child completes their homework each night, as it reinforces the concepts learned during that day. I encourage and expect neatness with all work in and out of the classroom. The homework folder should be brought back to school every day. Because the folder is used as a means of communication between home and school, it should be brought back even if the work is incomplete. I would like to see your child develop good homework habits that they can rely on in the future. Kindergarten is the initial building block for this process. You can expect to see their class work in their folder each day. You can expect to see all graded work in their folders on Fridays.
Reading Folders (Red)
Your child will have a reading folder as well that they will bring to their reading teacher each day. This folder should also come to school each day and should be checked each night. The left side of the folder will be for work to “Leave at Home” and the right side of their folder will be for work that should come “Back to School”. I will again provide these labels once the folders are in.
Classroom Expectations and Behavior
There are many ways in which I encourage good behavior in class. I recognize that each child has unique needs and what works for one child many not work for another. I encourage smart choices as an individual and as a class. I, along with the rest of the Kindergarten team, practice the Colors System. I will be implementing the color calendar along with class dojo however, which may differ from the other teachers.
Your child will start on Green each day at 0 points (they will be reset each night). Throughout the day, they will earn and/or lose points and at the end of the day, they will color in their weekly color tracker. If your child’s color is Yellow, Orange or Red at the end of the day please initial the box under the color so that I know that you saw. If your child is on red at the end of the day, I will send an email or send home a note detailing what occurred in school that day. If a note is sent home, parents are expected to sign and return the note the following day. The signed note acknowledges that you have spoken with your child about making better choices while at school.
You will find this behavior code at the top of the calendar each week. Please use this calendar every day to reflect on how your child’s behavior was at school that day. This calendar will be located in their homework folder and will remain inside their folder for each week. Over the weekend, I ask that you review the week and celebrate the wonderful things that your child is doing in school!
Communication
To be an advocate for your child, it is important that you understand the curriculum and focus of our classroom. You will be receiving our classroom newsletter every Monday. My newsletter will provide you with what we are scheduled to focus on during the week, though always tentative, upcoming events, reminders, and ways in which you can support your child’s growth and learning at home. If you ever have any questions please feel free to reach me at school (773-534-5840) or through email at [email protected]. Dojo is the best way to communicate with me and I make a strong effort to respond to all messages within twenty-four hours. You can also communicate through email. A paper is coming home with you today that will have the login and password pertaining to your child. I strongly believe that communication is the key to a successful school year so please reach out with any and all questions and concerns.
Absences
If your child is ever absent, please send your child with a signed and dated note upon returning to school. If there are any absences you know of ahead of time, please notify me so that I can send classwork and homework in advance. It is crucial that your child be at school every day, and on time, so that your child can continue to learn, grow, and reach their potential in all developmental areas.
Morning Drop-Off/Breakfast
Students are to arrive at school no later than 7:30a.m. Students must enter the CAC upon arrival. All students have the option of eating school provided breakfast in the classroom. Breakfast ends promptly at 7:50. Students who arrive after 7:45 may miss breakfast service because our cafeteria staff will have left the POD. If your child chooses to eat breakfast at school they are to eat school provided breakfast only and not food brought from home.
Dismissal
School ends at 2:30p.m. Kindergarten students will begin dismissal at 2:15 to allow time for students to get to their destination before higher grades are released. The walker door opens between 2:15-2:30. Please try your best to keep your child’s dismissal procedure consistent from day to day to alleviate confusion and anxiety for your child. Kindergarten will be dismissed from the 1st floor gym, separate from the rest of the grades. Only those listed on the emergency contact paper will be allowed to pick up your child. Please, always bring the green pass with you to pick up your child. If you need additional passes, let me know and I can provide you with additional passes. If you child will be going home differently, a signed note MUST be brought to school in order for me to release them in any other way than their normal procedure.
Birthday Policy Notice
There will be NO treats distributed for birthdays. If your child would like to celebrate their birthday with a special pencil, sticker, or small treasure, please send enough for the entire class. Also, please do not send party invitations to school unless they are for the entire class, boys only, or girls only.
